Your Data
Your family story should stay understandable and portable.
A plain-language guide to what Kinvella keeps, what you can download, what happens when you cancel, and what permanent deletion means.
Your data at a glance
- Your owned family workspace is private by default.
- You can download a portable ZIP of the family data Kinvella stores for you.
- Canceling a paid plan does not delete your family.
- Permanent account deletion is a separate deliberate action.
- Data owned by another family remains with that family when it is shared with you.
1. Downloading your family
Signed-in account owners can download their current Kinvella family from Account → Privacy & Data → Download Export. Kinvella creates the archive when you request it and sends it as a ZIP download.
The export is designed to remain readable without Kinvella. Core records are stored as UTF-8 JSON, and available private portrait files are included in a portraits folder.
2. What the export contains
Your archive includes the data owned by your Kinvella account, including:
- account profile details, without your password or payment credentials;
- your real family members, relationships, life events, and migration stops;
- available active private portraits and a portrait manifest;
- the KinCrest value currently saved on Kinvella's server;
- saved KinSight resemblance results;
- family-access roles and public-story settings, without the secret public Story URL.
Starter/sample relatives are not exported as your family data. Kinvella also excludes password hashes, session/security tokens, Stripe payment-card details, AWS request IDs, provider diagnostics, and internal operational logs.
Kinvella avatar artwork may be referenced rather than duplicated. Detailed KinCrest builder state that exists only in a browser is not guaranteed to be present in a server-generated export.
3. KinSight results stay reusable
Kinvella keeps a limited saved comparison result for unchanged portrait pairs so clicking Analyze again does not require the same portraits to be sent to Amazon Rekognition again. This reduces duplicate processing and cost.
Your export includes the saved resemblance result and limited useful metadata, but not AWS request IDs or detailed provider diagnostics. Replacing or deleting a portrait invalidates cached comparisons that depend on the old image when they are no longer reusable.
4. Families shared with you
Your export contains the family you own. If another person gives you viewer or editor access to their family, that family's records remain owned by that account and are not copied into your personal export.
For your own family, the export includes the access roles you granted to other Kinvella users. Secret public Story URLs are intentionally excluded from the archive.
5. Canceling is not deleting
Canceling a paid subscription stops renewal according to the billing period shown in your Account. It does not automatically erase your family. If the family is above the Free plan limit after a downgrade, the family remains viewable while normal editing is paused until you upgrade or reduce the number of people.
Delete Account is different. It permanently removes the Kinvella account and the family data owned by that account after deliberate password and confirmation checks, and Kinvella attempts to cancel any active subscription first.
